Man extradited from Far North Queensland on murder charge — North Ryde
Date: 1/03/2009
A man has been charged and will face court today following his extradition from Far North Queensland in relation to the alleged murder of a man at North Ryde in January.
Officers from Queensland Police arrested the 46-year-old man on the Flinders Highway near Richmond on Wednesday (25 February).
Detectives from Gladesville Local Area Command formed Strike Force Quallee and issued a first instance arrest warrant for the man in relation to the death of 28-year-old father-of-two, Minghai Jiang.
They circulated a description of the man to interstate police, which led to an anonymous tip-off from a member of the public to Queensland Police.
Strike Force Quallee detectives flew to Townsville on Thursday (26 February) to interview the man.
He appeared at Townsville Local Court on Friday (27 February) when Strike Force Quallee detectives successfully sought the man’s extradition.
He was flown back to Sydney late yesterday afternoon where he was taken to Parramatta Police Station and charged with murder. He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today.
Earlier this month Mr Jiang’s wife made an emotional plea via the media to gather public help into the death. She has been informed of the arrest.
Mr Jiang’s body was found inside his home on Parklands Road shortly before 10pm on Tuesday 13 January. A post mortem examination revealed he allegedly died from blunt force trauma to his upper body by a hammer.
Gladesville Local Area Command Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Ian McNab, said the arrest was made possible by diligent work from police and the public.
“We would like to thank our counterparts in Queensland for their assistance in making this swift arrest. We also thank the public and the media who have played a crucial role in the arrest,” he said.
