Two youths charged over violent assaults – North Nowra
Date: 28/02/2009
Two teenagers have been arrested and charged over two violent street robberies near Nowra, on the state’s south coast, earlier this month.
About 12.30am on Friday 6 February, a 27-year-old man was set upon by a group of youths on the Princes Highway, Bomaderry.
The man was so badly beaten by the alleged offenders he required facial reconstruction surgery at Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick, in Sydney’s east.
Meanwhile, about 1.15am the same day, a second 27-year-old man was walking home from a North Nowra pub when he was seriously assaulted by a group of youths.
His alleged attackers struck him repeatedly with a hockey stick and kicked him.
The man sustained multiple head fractures and bleeding to the brain and has undergone extensive neurosurgery at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney.
Strike Force Essey, comprising Shoalhaven Local Area Command detectives, was established to investigate both incidents.
Following extensive inquiries, investigators yesterday executed simultaneous search warrants on two homes in Berry and Bomaderry.
Two 18-year-old men were arrested and taken to Nowra Police Station and subsequently charged with robbery in company causing wounding and assault with intent to rob whilst armed causing wounding. The pair was refused bail to appear in Nowra Local Court yesterday where one was remanded in custody and the other was granted strict conditional bail.
Both teenagers will reappear in court at a later date.
