Joint-agency operation targets truancy in Rosemeadow area
Date: 27/02/2009
A joint-agency operation targeting truancy has been conducted in the Rosemeadow area, in Sydney’s south-west.
‘Operation Get Smart’ was run yesterday (Thursday 26 February) and involved police from Campbelltown Area Command and officials from the Department of Education and Training, Department of Community Services and Housing NSW.
The operation involved a doorknock of all residences in the area known as the ‘3Ms’ – MacBeth Way, Malcolm Way and McDuff Way – to ensure all school-age children were attending school.
Willoughby Way and Exton Way, which border the estate, were also doorknocked.
“Operation Get Smart is a strategy under the Campbelltown Crime Prevention Partnership. The object of the operation was to ensure that children are attending school and getting an education,” said Superintendent Smith.
The operation forms part of an interagency response to recent public order incidents in the housing estate.
“The presence of all the agencies meant that we could address any issues that might be preventing kids from going to school,” said Superintendent Smith.
During yesterday’s operation, a 14-year-old Woy Woy boy was arrested by police after he was found to be in breach of his bail and carrying a cutting implement.
He was charged and refused bail to appear in Campbelltown Children’s Court yesterday.
A 28-year-old Rosemeadow man was also arrested after threatening a civilian NSW Police Force employee with a knife.
He was taken to Campbelltown Police Station and charged with being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and common assault and refused bail to appear in Campbelltown Local Court today.
Acting Superintendent Doyle, speaking on behalf of all agencies on the day, said “The local residents were pleased to meet with staff involved, and were especially interested in discussing access to disability support, health-related services and home care issues.”
