Police investigate theft of exotic animals – Far South Coast LAC
Date: 27/02/2009
Police on the state’s far south coast are investigating the theft of a large number of exotic animals from a Merimbula warehouse.
Police have been told unknown persons forced entry to the warehouse on Arthur Kaine Drive, Merimbula, and stole rare and exotic Australian reptiles and mammals from their enclosures.
Specialist forensics police examined the area for evidence.
Investigating officers are now seeking public assistance as they continue their inquiries.
While police have been told the break and enter occurred some time over the weekend, they’re also examining possible links between the break-in and the seizure of animals at Sydney Airport last Friday (20 February).
A 24-year-old Bonnett Bay man was stopped by Australian Customs Officers allegedly in the process of removing the animals from Australia.
He was arrested and subsequently charged with exporting a regulated native specimen without a permit and conditionally bailed to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on 24 March 2009.
The origin of the animals is yet to be established and investigations are ongoing.
Anyone who has information that might assist police is urged to contact Merimbula Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
