Organised Crime Squad and Griffith Police raid cannabis crop in orange orchard
Date: 27/02/2009

Police have arrested a man and destroyed dozens of cannabis plants after drug raids at Griffith, in the state’s Riverina.

Around 9.15am yesterday (Thursday 26 February), detectives from the State Crime Command Firearms and Organised Crime Squad and officers from the Griffith Local Area Command executed search warrants on two farms in Murray Rd, Yoogali.

At one farm, police allege they found 90 mature cannabis plants hidden in an orange orchard. Officers also allegedly located irrigation pipes, inline fans and a large carbon filter, consistent with the drying of cannabis leaf.

The plants, up to two metres tall, were pulled from the ground, recorded in evidence and later destroyed in a controlled burn-off. The haul had an estimated potential street value of up to $200,000.

The operation, which featured local detectives, Target Action Group personnel, Crime Prevention Unit officers and general duties staff, was part of an investigation into cannabis cultivation in orange groves in the Griffith area.

A 40-year-old Yoogali man was arrested at the first property, allegedly in possession of a quantity of cash he couldn’t account for. He was charged with cultivate cannabis and deal in the proceeds of crime. The man was refused bail and ordered to appear in the Griffith Local Court later today.

At the second property, officers allegedly located a .177 calibre air rifle.

Police expect to charge a second man with firearms-related charges.
