North Ryde murder arrest
Date: 26/02/2009

Detectives from NSW have travelled to Far North Queensland following the arrest of a man in relation to the murder of father-of-two Minghai Jiang at North Ryde last month.

Officers from Queensland Police arrested the 46-year-old man at a truck stop on the Flinders Highway near Richmond yesterday afternoon.

Detectives from Gladesville Local Area Command formed Strike Force Qualec and issued a first instance arrest warrant for the man in relation to the death of 28-year-old Mr Jiang.

They circulated a description of the man to police interstate, which led to an anonymous tip-off to Queensland Police.

Strike Force Qualec detectives flew to Townsville this morning and are currently speaking with the man at the local police station.

They will seek to extradite the man to Sydney when he appears at Townsville Local Court later today/tomorrow on one count of murder.

Last week, Mr Hai Jiang’s wife made an emotional plea via the media to gather public help into the death. She has been informed of the arrest.

The man’s body was found inside his home on Parklands Road shortly before 10pm on Tuesday 13 January. A post mortem revealed he died from blunt force trauma to his upper body caused by a hammer.

Gladesville Local Area Command Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Ian McNab said the arrest was made possible by diligent work and cooperation by investigators in both NSW and Queensland.

“We have worked very closely with our counterparts in Queensland and it is extremely satisfying to see it culminate in a swift result. “I also thank the public and the media who have played a crucial role today’s arrest,” he said.
