Double fatal heavy vehicle collision - Mudgee
Date: 25/02/2009

Two men are dead following a heavy vehicle collision in the State’s west yesterday afternoon.

About 2pm a B-Double semi-trailer was travelling south on Coonamble Road in Baradine with approximately 50 cattle on board, when it failed to negotiate a left hand bend in the road.

The vehicle drifted to the wrong side of the road and tipped onto its side, before colliding with a tree. The impact was such that the tree became embedded in the cab of the truck.

A number of cattle were flung from the semi-trailer and killed. Further cattle were trapped in both carriages before being freed by State Emergency Services and the Volunteer Rescue Association.

Emergency services staff worked for several hours to pull both driver and passenger from the embedded cab of the truck. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Coonamble Road was closed for seven hours during the recovery.

Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision are continuing and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Mudgee Police on (02) 6372-8599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
