Utility driver dies following crash with fire truck — Wyong
Date: 25/02/2009
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner following the death of a utility driver on the state’s Central Coast last night.
Shortly before 5.30pm the utility and a NSW Fire Brigades truck were involved in a crash at the intersection of Anzac Avenue and Hope Street, Wyong.
Three fire fighters sustained minor injuries in the crash, but went to the aid of the 71-year-old utility driver, rendering assistance until the arrival of paramedics.
The critically injured man, from Wadalba, was taken by ambulance to Wyong Hospital, but died a short time later. Relatives have been notified and a post mortem examination is expected to be carried out at Newcastle in the coming days.
As a precaution, the three fire fighters were also taken to Wyong Hospital for assessment. The fire truck had been returning to the nearby fire station after attending a job.
Meanwhile, police from Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command established a crime scene and examined the crash site.
A number of statements were taken from independent witnesses, with police continuing their inquiries for inclusion in a report for the Coroner.
The fire truck and the utility will undergo a mechanical examination as part of the investigation.
Members of the public who witnessed the crash, and who have not already spoken with investigating officers, are urged to contact Wyong Police Station on (02) 4352-4899 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
