Man charged over alleged ‘glassing’ in Newcastle pub
Date: 15/01/2009

A man is due to face court later today over an alleged ‘glassing’ inside a hotel at Newcastle last night, which left a staff member with a serious wound to the head.

Police have been told hotel staff were attempting to remove a man and woman from the Hunter Street premises shortly before 10.30pm when a scuffle broke out.

During the scuffle it is alleged the male patron threw a schooner glass towards the 52-year-old owner of the hotel.

The glass struck the man to the head, causing a large cut and resulting in a substantial amount of blood loss.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to John Hunter Hospital where his condition deteriorated, before stabilising.

The injured man was expected to remain in hospital overnight for observation.

Meanwhile, a 49-year-old man was arrested without incident at the scene by Newcastle City Local Area Command detectives and general duties officers.

He was charged overnight with wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and reckless wounding.

The local man was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court today.
