Police investigate fatal plane crash – Hunter Valley
Date: 25/12/2008

A report will be prepared for the Coroner following the death of a man after a plane crash in rugged bushland in the Hunter Valley.

Around 4.30pm yesterday (Wednesday 24 December 2008), a truck driver received a distress call on his UHF radio from the pilot of a two-seater Cessna which was en route from Mudgee to Glen Innes.

The pilot provided co-ordinates in the Glenn Innes area for the crash site, but a search involving local police, ambulance paramedics, the Volunteer Rescue Association and a number of helicopters failed to locate any wreckage. That initial search was called off late last night due to poor light and dangerous conditions.

Acting on new information, police resumed a search at first light today (Thursday 25 December 2008) in the vicinity of the Coolah Tops National Park in the Hunter Valley.

About 10am today, searchers located the wreckage of the light plane.

The pilot, a 38-year-old man was located suffering suspected leg injuries. Emergency crews are currently moving him to a location where he can then be airlifted to hospital for further treatment. He’s reportedly in a serious but stable condition.

A 32-year-old man, who was a passenger in the aircraft, was located deceased at the scene.

A crime scene has been established and a report will be prepared for the Coroner into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Muswellbrook Police on (02) 6542 6999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
