Man arrested at gunpoint, four charged – Hexham
Date: 11/12/2008
Four men have been charged – with one arrested at gunpoint – after a licensed club was robbed in Hexham overnight.
Staff members were confronted by two men, allegedly wearing balaclavas and armed with a shotgun, about 11.30pm.
The men took cash and ran from the club, but were confronted in the car park by officers attached to the State Protection Support Unit (SPSU).
Police will allege one of the men pointed a firearm at police before he surrendered the weapon and was arrested.
The second man left the scene in a Holden Commodore and was pursued along Old Maitland Road. The pursuit ended when the Commodore and a police car collided. The driver was then arrested and the cash recovered.
A further two men were arrested a short time later at a home in Medowie.
Police have now charged four men in relation to the robbery:
A 23-year-old Medowie man has been charged with armed robbery, steal a motor vehicle, and drive conveyance without consent.
A 21-year-old Belmont man, a 27-year-old Medowie man, and a 29-year-old Windale man, have each been charged with armed robbery.
All four men were refused bail and will appear in Newcastle Local Court later today.
The arrests come after a lengthy investigation by officers attached to Strike Force Dominic.
Strike Force Dominic was established in October 2008 as a result of a number of armed robberies in the Newcastle City LAC, Port Stephens LAC, Central Hunter LAC, Lake Macquarie LAC. The strike force includes officers from these LACS as well as State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad.
