Man drives on footpath near youths, threatens – Raymond Terrace
Date: 12/11/2008
A man will face court on several dangerous driving offences after allegedly mounting a footpath and driving towards a group of youths in the State’s north yesterday morning.
Witnesses have told police that about 8.30am a driver was travelling east along Benjamin Lee Drive in Raymond Terrace near Lakeside Shopping Centre.
A group of 14 students, aged 13 to 15, were standing at a bus stop outside the mall.
It is alleged the motorist then drove up onto the footpath, at the entrance to a childcare centre, and continued on toward the teenagers.
It is alleged the motorist drove over the foot of one young male and struck the knee of another.
The car continued along the footpath and into a group of rubbish bins, causing them to scatter and spill across the road and his vehicle to stop.
It is alleged the driver then exited the vehicle and ran towards the youths armed with a steering wheel lock. The youths ran off and the driver fled the scene in the vehicle.
Officers attached to Port Stephens Local Area Command attended the scene and are conducting extensive inquiries into the incident. Numerous witness accounts have been taken.
A 59-year-old Raymond Terrace man was arrested and later charged with predatory driving, furious driving and being armed with intent. He has been conditionally bailed and is due to appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court on 24 November.
Anyone with pertinent information relating to the incident is asked to contact Port Stephens Police on (02) 4907 1510 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
