Elderly man killed after car and scooter collide - Cooranbong
Date: 10/11/2008

An elderly man has died after his electric scooter was hit by a car at Cooranbong, in the Hunter region.

The 98-year-old man was riding the electric pedestrian scooter across Freemans Drive just before 1pm yesterday (Sunday 9 November), when it was struck by an eastbound Hyundai Accent sedan.

The scooter was dragged several metres by the vehicle before coming to a stop.

The man was ejected from the scooter during the incident, causing serious head injuries and leg fractures.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance personnel before being conveyed to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital for treatment of his injuries; however, he died a short time later.

Police from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command attended the scene and the road was closed to allow officers from the Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit to conduct inquiries.

The driver of the sedan, a 77-year-old local man, was uninjured. He was questioned and subjected to a breath test at the scene with negative result.

Early inquiries suggest the scooter rider has ridden out from behind a third vehicle into the path of the sedan. Investigations into the incident are continuing and anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that might assist police is urged to contact the police.
