Four charged after power station protest – Muswellbrook
Date: 1/11/2008

Four people have been charged after a protest at a Hunter Valley power station this morning.

About 8am, police were called to a power station on the New England Highway at Muswellbrook after reports of a protest.

Once inside police found three people had chained themselves to infrastructure within the building. They were removed by Police Rescue Squad personnel and subsequently arrested.

A fourth person, who was allegedly filming the protest, was also arrested. nThose arrested were taken to Muswellbrook Police Station for questioning. Three men, aged 45, 26 and 27, and a 26–year-old woman have each been charged with entering enclosed lands and remain upon enclosed lands.

The woman is a Katoomba resident while all the men are from Newcastle. They were granted conditional bail and are expected to appear in Muswellbrook Local Court on 9 December.

A group of 20 people who had entered the power station grounds complied with police directions to leave the area. Inquiries into this morning’s events are still continuing.

Northern Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Lee Shearer, said today’s events had the potential to draw police resources from those in the community who were in genuine crisis.

“While police respect the right of an individual or group to protest, the community needs to remember these are people who willingly placed themselves in this position.

“These people are intent on needlessly wasting police time and resources when the community expects our police to be out there preventing crime and helping the public when they most need assistance,” Assistant Commissioner Shearer said.
