Police end marathon pursuit with road spikes
Date: 1/11/2008
Police have arrested and charged a P-plate driver after a marathon, high speed pursuit early this morning through the Hunter Valley.
Just before 12.30am, highway patrol officers from Central Hunter Local Area Command spotted a 1995 model Ford Falcon utility being driven in a dangerous manner through road works on the Pacific Highway at Maitland.
The officers tried in vain to pull the ute over and a pursuit ensued south along the New England Highway and back onto the Pacific Highway at Hexham.
The pursuit continued for 85 kilometres with the utility allegedly reaching a top-speed of 180-kilometres-an-hour.
The 34-minute chase came to an end at the intersection of Nerong Rd, Nerong, where officers from the Manning Lakes Highway Patrol deployed road spikes.
A 20-year-old P-plate (P2) driver, from Wilton near Wollongong, was arrested at the scene.
He was taken to Bulladelah Police Station and subjected to a breath analysis which allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of .08.
He has been charged with mid-range drink-driving and drive manner dangerous; and will face Forster Local Court on 3 December.
