Man charged over serious assault – Tanilba Bay
Date: 17/10/2008

Police have charged a teenager over the serious assault of a man at Tanilba Bay, north of Newcastle.

Around 1.45am on Sunday, 12 October, a 56-year-old man was found lying unconscious in the middle of Beatty Boulevard.

He had suffered a fractured skull, broken nose and deep cut to the top of his head.

The victim was immediately airlifted to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

He remains in a critical but stable condition.

Detectives from the Port Stephens Local Area Command ruled out robbery as a motive for the attack and traced the victim’s movements to a local licensed club.

Investigations led police to Rylstone, in the state’s central west, where they arrested and charged a 19-year-old man with recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He has been granted conditional bail, ordered to appear in the Mudgee Local Court on November 11.

Port Stephens Local Area Commander, Charles Haggett, has warned, “It doesn’t take much for an argument to escalate into violence.

“It only takes one punch to have a devastating effect for both the victim and the offender, “ Superintendent Haggett said, “People need to show restraint, particularly if they’re consuming alcohol.”
