Long weekend road toll rises to four following fatal crash - Hunter Region

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal crash this morning near Lochinbar in the state’s Hunter region.
About 11.20am police from the Central Hunter Local Area Command and NSW Ambulance personnel responded to reports of a three vehicle crash on the New England Highway about 2km west of Lochinbar.
It appears that a white Ford Falcon sedan towing a trailer with a motorcycle was travelling west on the highway and has veered onto the incorrect side of the road. The Ford has collided with a Mitsubishi Lancer sedan causing it to rotate and collide with a beige Mazda 626 sedan travelling behind it.
The woman driving the Mitsubishi Lancer died at the scene. The male driver of the Ford Falcon and the male occupants of the Mazda received minor injuries. The driver of the Ford Falcon was conveyed by Westpac helicopter to John Hunter Hospital and the occupants of the other car were taken by ambulance to Maitland Hospital.
Newcastle Region Crash Unit investigators are conducting inquiries into the incident. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that might assist with their inquiries is urged to contact them via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Police will prepare a report for the information of the NSW Coroner.
The road toll for the October long weekend has now risen to four. The annual October long weekend traffic blitz, “Operation Slowdown”, commenced at 0001hrs on Friday 3 October) and concludes at 2359hrs today (Monday 6 October), with double demerit points in effect for speeding and seatbelt offences.
