Four people arrested after ‘glassing’– Hamilton

Police from the Newcastle City Local Area Command are investigating an incident overnight where a woman was struck with a glass bottle and four people were arrested.

About 10pm on Saturday 4 October, a 40-year-old Ellermore Vale woman and a 34-year-old Belmont woman were involved in an altercation outside a hotel in Beaumont Street, Hamilton where the younger woman was struck on the forehead with a glass bottle.

The injured woman was taken to the Mater Hospital and had ten stitches inserted in facial lacerations above her right eye.

Police attended to investigate the ‘glassing’ and a 25-year-old Newcastle woman allegedly assaulted a police officer and resisted him and a colleague.

The 40-year-old woman attempted to confront the officers as they restrained the younger woman and was stopped. A 46-year-old Ellermore Vale man then attempted to confront police and was restrained by security staff from the hotel.

All were arrested and conveyed to Newcastle Police Station where two ecstacy tablets were allegedly found on the younger woman.

A crime scene was established and a 21-year-old Waratah man entered the crime scene and refused to leave. As police attempted to remove him he allegedly assaulted an officer and resisted others. He was also arrested and taken to Newcastle Police Station where he allegedly elbowed the face of a Corrective Services Officer causing a minor injury.

The 46-year-old man was charged with hinder police while the 25-year-old woman was charged with assault police, resist police and possess drug. The 21-year-old man was charged with assault, resist and hinder police, offensive language and assault law enforcement officer. The 40-year-old woman was charged with malicious wounding and hinder police.

All were granted bail to appear at the Newcastle Local Court on 28 October. Inquiries into the matter continue.
