Five arrested over graffiti offences – Lake Macquarie LAC
Date: 12/10/2008

Police have arrested five people in relation to a spate of graffiti offences in the Lake Macquarie area, south of Newcastle.

About 10pm yesterday (Saturday 11 October), police attended a service station at Warners Bay after receiving a public tip-off about a number of males allegedly graffitiing the business and other neighbouring shops.

It follows a high volume of calls to police about acts of vandalism in and around Warners Bay, Speers Point and Boolaroo in recent weeks.

The three men and two male youths were arrested by police attached to Lake Macquarie Local Area Command after allegedly being caught in the act of ‘tagging’ local business premises.

Police also allegedly located a large amount of wet graffiti in the immediate area, including on electrical boxes, light poles, fences, a carpet store, pizza outlet and an employment agency.

The five were taken to Belmont Police Station for questioning.

A 19-year-old Boolaroo man was subsequently charged with three counts of destroying or damaging property; an 18-year-old Wallsend man was charged with two counts of destroying or damaging property; and an 18-year-old Kotara South man was charged with one count of destroying or damaging property.

The trio has been conditionally bailed to appear in Belmont Local Court on 30 October 2008.

Meanwhile, it’s expected a 15-year-old Macquarie Hills boy and 16-year-old Eagle Vale boy will be dealt with by police under the Young Offenders Act.

Inquiries are continuing into similar incidents in the local area and police have not ruled-out laying further charges.
