Date: 11/10/2008
Police have been called in to break up several fights after an 18th birthday got out of control at Buttaba, south of Newcastle, overnight.
Officers from Lake Macquarie and neighbouring local area commands were deployed to Canowie Crescent about 1am amid reports of a large number of partygoers fighting and smashing bottles in the street.
Police were forced to intervene and use capsicum spray to disperse the volatile crowd. At least three police officers received minor injuries during the incident.
A 20-year-old Kilaben Bay man was arrested at the scene. He was issued a notice to appear in court at a later date for offences, including assaulting and resisting police.
Several others were issued Criminal Infringement Notices (CINs) for other public order offences.
Meanwhile, a man has been arrested and charged by police over a serious assault at Southampton Avenue, Buttaba, about 2.25am today.
The 18-year-old man was taken to Toronto Police Station and questioned over the incident, in which a 17-year-old male youth suffered a suspected broken jaw.
It’s believed both the alleged offender and victim were at the party in Canowie Crescent earlier in the night.
The man was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault and conditionally bailed to appear in Toronto Local Court on 29 October 2008.
A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged after crashing a car into a house after leaving the same party.
About 12.20am, the teenager was attempting to turn right into Newark Street from Canowie Crescent, when the white Audi A4 sedan he was driving mounted the kerb and crashed into the home, causing significant damage. There were no reported injuries.
The learner driver and a female passenger fled the scene; however, police responding to the incident located them a short time later.
The Woodrising youth was arrested and taken to Toronto Police Station where he was subjected to a breath analysis, which allegedly returned a reading of 0.115.
He’s been charged with mid-range drink driving and will appear in court at a later date. His licence has also been confiscated by police.
