Police charge man over string of armed hold-ups - Newcastle

A man has been arrested and charged by police over a string of armed robberies on businesses in the Newcastle area.
The 36-year-old Bar Beach man was arrested yesterday (Wednesday 29 August) and taken to Newcastle Police Station for questioning by investigating officers.
He was subsequently charged with four counts of robbery whilst armed with an offensive weapon.
Three of the charges relate to the following alleged offences in the Newcastle area:
* An armed robbery at a service station at The Junction on 3 August. At the time of this offence the man was allegedly armed with a knife;
* A hold-up at a Cooks Hill newsagency on 4 August, in which the offender was allegedly brandishing a knife;
* A robbery at a chicken shop at Newcastle West on 5 August, during which staff were allegedly threatened with a knife.
The fourth charge relates to an armed robbery allegedly committed at a liquor store at Glenbrook, in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, on 11 August.
The man’s been refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court later today.
