Escapee recaptured and charged — Newcastle

A prison escapee will face court after being recaptured by police attached to Waratah Local Area Command.
The Cessnock Jail inmate was taken under guard to John Hunter Hospital on Thursday
(23 August) for treatment of injuries he claimed to have suffered after falling from a bunk bed. About 4.45pm, the man ran to an emergency exit adjacent to his hospital room and escaped.
Police from Waratah and Newcastle Local Area Command, along with Corrective Services, conducted an extensive search of the Newcastle region in an effort to locate the man.
About 2.45pm yesterday (Friday 24 August), a police operation resulted in the arrest of a
23-year-old man at Redhead. He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with escape lawful custody and demand money with menaces.
He was refused bail and is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.
