only comprehensive institute of its kind to be based in regional Australia.
Established in 1998 as a partnership between Hunter Health, The University of
Newcastle and the Hunter community, HMRI’s goal is to provide a platform for
the development of biotechnology based industries and support and promote world
class health and medical research, training and employment in the Hunter.
HMRI has more than 350 researchers across several university and hospital sites
working collaboratively in the key research programs of Brain and Mental
Health, Cancer, Cardiovascular Health, Health Behaviour and Public Health,
Mothers and Babies and Vaccines, Immunity, Viruses and Asthma (VIVA).
HMRI’s goal is to create a better life for humanity through medical research.
Medical breakthroughs don’t happen overnight. They involve many years of

clinical studies.
